The Daily Signal | Monday, October 26, 2026 | Delegate the infrastructure, retain the accountability

By Bernard W. Piccione AWS’s model-customization announcement leads this edition. The leadership question is not simply whether to customize a model. It is who owns the objective, the acceptance test, and the decision to release it. Delegate infrastructure operations where appropriate. Keep accountability for business outcomes inside the enterprise.

01 — AI & emerging technology

AWS announced general availability of [SageMaker AI training sessions](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/announcing-new-ways-to-customize-models-with-sagemaker-ai-without-managing-gpus/). Teams can write their own post-training loops, including custom loss functions and reward signals, while the service handles GPU allocation, distributed execution, fault recovery, and checkpoint storage.

The executive implication: evaluate customization on its business merits, not infrastructure convenience alone. Before funding a pilot, require a named business owner, an approved training dataset, and a measurable advantage over the current approach. Set a spending ceiling and release criteria before training begins.

02 — AI in dental service organizations

AWS’s [Amazon Quick healthcare deployment guide](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/deploy-ai-in-a-hipaa-eligible-environment-with-amazon-quick/) makes an important distinction: the service is HIPAA-eligible, but eligibility is not compliance. The guide addresses protected health information flows and deployment responsibilities. This is healthcare guidance, not evidence of a dental implementation.

For a DSO, treat eligibility as the start of review—not authorization to connect patient information. Before approving an agent, have privacy, security, and operations map its data sources, access permissions, outputs, and retention. Start with a bounded administrative workflow and require documented approval before introducing patient data.

03 — Cybersecurity & risk management

CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog based on evidence of active exploitation: [CVE-2026-110447 in Collabora Online’s Built-in CODE Server](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2026/10/23/cisa-adds-one-known-exploited-vulnerability-catalog-0), involving OS command injection, and [CVE-2026-114625 in Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2026/10/23/cisa-adds-one-known-exploited-vulnerability-catalog), involving SQL injection.

The implication is immediate prioritization where these products are present. Ask security and infrastructure leaders to verify exposure, including provider-managed instances, and assign remediation owners. Require evidence of mitigation or remediation and explicit approval of any remaining risk. A ticket marked complete should not substitute for verification.

04 — Operationalizing AI

AWS describes how [Bayer Crop Science built its Agentic Decision Engine](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-bayer-crop-science-built-an-agentic-decision-engine-on-amazon-bedrock-agentcore-with-aws-unified-operations/), a multi-agent platform on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. It lets breeders, analysts, and researchers ask natural-language questions about their analytics platform. The account also covers production preparation with AWS Unified Operations.

The useful leadership lesson is to make production readiness part of the project, not a handoff after the demonstration. Require an operating owner, an inventory of agent permissions, failure alerts, and a tested fallback. Have the business owner approve representative answers and escalation behavior before expanding access.

05 — Data & analytics strategy

AWS reports that [IskayPet built a multilingual corporate knowledge assistant](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-iskaypet-unified-corporate-knowledge-with-amazon-bedrock-managed-knowledge-bases/) using Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Bases. It answers employee questions across retail, veterinary, onboarding, and procurement in four languages and three countries, without the company managing retrieval-augmented generation infrastructure.

For enterprise leaders, separate managed retrieval from ownership of the underlying knowledge. Before expanding a similar assistant, assign an accountable owner to each document collection. Establish authoritative versions, access rules, review dates, and a process for retiring obsolete guidance. Test conflicting documents and unanswered questions—not just successful retrieval.

06 — Process automation

AWS describes how [Rescale built an AI test-triage agent](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-rescale-built-an-ai-triage-agent-with-strands-agents-and-ai-dlc/) using Strands Agents, Amazon Bedrock, and the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle framework. The supplied account reports development in weeks; it does not establish a quantified operating return.

Use this as a candidate pattern for bounded triage, not a blanket case for autonomous execution. Select one queue, record the current handling time and error rate, and initially require human review of proposed classifications. Judge the pilot on accepted recommendations, rework, and total resolution time—not development speed alone.

07 — Managing technical complexity

AWS documents a specific deployment conflict: updating a [SageMaker AI endpoint with Application Auto Scaling registered](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/orchestrating-sagemaker-ai-endpoint-auto-scaling-with-aws-cdk/) causes CloudFormation and CDK deployments to fail. Its proposed reusable CDK construct uses custom resources to deregister and re-register auto scaling within the deployment.

The executive implication is to fund integration reliability alongside model capability. Ask platform engineering to identify comparable dependencies in the AI release path and turn repeatable fixes into supported deployment components. For this pattern, test failed updates, restoration of scaling, and rollback. Name an owner for the component and its maintenance.
