The Daily Signal | Sunday, October 25, 2026 | Managed infrastructure, accountable leadership

By Bernard W. Piccione The lead development: AWS has made SageMaker AI training sessions generally available, letting teams customize models while AWS manages the underlying compute. My executive takeaway: delegate infrastructure work, not accountability. Before approving another AI initiative, ask who owns its objective, evidence of quality, operating limits, and production results.

01 — AI & emerging technology

AWS [announced generally available training sessions](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/announcing-new-ways-to-customize-models-with-sagemaker-ai-without-managing-gpus/) for SageMaker AI serverless model customization. Teams can write their own post-training loops, including custom reward signals, while the service handles GPU allocation, distributed execution, fault recovery, and checkpoint storage. This is the strongest enterprise development in this edition: more control over model training without taking on the same infrastructure responsibilities.

The leadership question is whether customization solves a defined business problem. Before funding a pilot, require a baseline against the existing model, an evaluation dataset, a spending ceiling, and a named business owner. Treat better task performance—not successful training—as the acceptance criterion.

02 — AI in dental service organizations

AWS describes Amazon Quick as [HIPAA-eligible and explicitly distinguishes eligibility from compliance](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/deploy-ai-in-a-hipaa-eligible-environment-with-amazon-quick/). Its guidance addresses protected health information flows and deployment in healthcare environments. For a DSO considering the service, treat that eligibility as a starting point for review, not authorization to connect patient information.

Before a pilot, have privacy, security, and operations jointly map the proposed information flow. Document permitted data, user access, retention, contractual requirements, and escalation responsibilities. Consider starting with approved administrative policies rather than patient records. Keep clinical decisions outside that initial scope.

03 — Cybersecurity & risk management

CISA added two vulnerabilities to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog based on evidence of active exploitation: [Collabora Online Built-in CODE Server OS command injection, CVE-2026-110447](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2026/10/23/cisa-adds-one-known-exploited-vulnerability-catalog-0), and [Arista VeloCloud Orchestrator SQL injection, CVE-2026-114625](https://www.cisa.gov/news-events/alerts/2026/10/23/cisa-adds-one-known-exploited-vulnerability-catalog). These warrant an exposure check, not merely placement in the next reporting cycle.

Ask security and infrastructure leaders to confirm whether either product is present, including in provider-managed environments. For any exposure, assign an owner to review applicable remediation guidance, implement fixes or mitigations, and verify completion. Report unresolved exposure and compensating controls to the accountable executive.

04 — Operationalizing AI

AWS reports that [Bayer Crop Science built an Agentic Decision Engine](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-bayer-crop-science-built-an-agentic-decision-engine-on-amazon-bedrock-agentcore-with-aws-unified-operations/) on Amazon Bedrock AgentCore. The multi-agent platform lets breeders, analysts, and researchers ask natural-language questions about their analytics platform. The account also covers production preparation with AWS Unified Operations—not just the application architecture.

Use production readiness as a separate approval gate from demonstration quality. For the next agent deployment, require a service owner, approved tool permissions, representative acceptance tests, monitoring, and a fallback procedure. Ask the COO to approve the operating workflow alongside the CIO's technical approval.

05 — Data & analytics strategy

AWS describes how [IskayPet built a multilingual corporate knowledge assistant](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-iskaypet-unified-corporate-knowledge-with-amazon-bedrock-managed-knowledge-bases/) using Amazon Bedrock Managed Knowledge Bases. It answers employee questions across retail, veterinary, onboarding, and procurement in four languages and three countries. This is a useful reference for shared knowledge access, not evidence of suitability for a particular enterprise's content or controls.

Make content ownership part of the investment decision. Select one knowledge domain and assign owners for authoritative documents, conflicting guidance, permissions, and review dates. Test whether answers use the correct source and acknowledge missing information before expanding the audience. Evaluate answer reliability alongside adoption.

06 — Process automation

AWS reports that [Rescale built an intelligent test-triage agent](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/how-rescale-built-an-ai-triage-agent-with-strands-agents-and-ai-dlc/) using Strands Agents, Amazon Bedrock, and the AI-Driven Development Lifecycle framework. The relevant executive pattern is a bounded workflow: test triage, rather than an open-ended mandate to automate engineering.

Choose a similarly narrow process with observable inputs and reviewable outputs. Start with recommendations rather than autonomous changes. Establish a baseline, then measure review effort, incorrect routing, unresolved exceptions, and total completion time. Expand authority only after the process owner accepts the evidence.

07 — Managing technical complexity

An [AWS deployment guide](https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/machine-learning/orchestrating-sagemaker-ai-endpoint-auto-scaling-with-aws-cdk/) documents a specific dependency problem: updating a SageMaker AI endpoint with Application Auto Scaling registered can cause CloudFormation and CDK deployments to fail. Its reusable construct deregisters and re-registers auto scaling during the deployment. Managed services still deserve dependency-aware release planning.

Ask platform engineering to identify comparable sequencing dependencies in critical AI services and encode them in reusable deployment components. Require rollback testing, restoration checks, and an owner for those components. For board reporting, pair AI delivery progress with evidence that services can be changed and recovered safely.
